The Secret of Plant-based Food is Hidden in the Bento

In order to promote vegetarian food, volunteers from Tzu Chi Singapore South Zone collaborated with vegetarian restaurants to promote a 10-day vegetarian bento campaign. Volunteers reached out to the community and invited 188 people to participate in the campaign over two rounds, totalling nearly 2,200 meals. By preparing delicious vegetarian bentos, the hope is to expose the public to the benefits of a plant-based diet, thus breaking the prejudice against the diet and eventually getting more to go meatless.

In multi-racial and multi-cultural Singapore, it is only natural to find a wide variety of cuisines. Among them, vegetarian dishes are becoming more diverse and more acceptable to the public. Have you tried them?

In order to promote vegetarian food, volunteers from Tzu Chi Singapore South Zone collaborated with vegetarian restaurants to promote a 10-day vegetarian bento campaign.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Lin Shuguo: After all, appetite is not so easy (to change), the (bento) this time is meant to be delicious and healthy to appeal to non-vegetarians. I hope that through this kind of food tasting, they will find that vegetarian food is not just as simple as fried bee hoon. In fact, it can be colourful and interesting.

Owner of Green On Earth, Foo Hong Kai: The (dishes) every day will be different, there will be a combination of one type of green vegetable, one type of mushroom and tofu. We make the colour more appealing to make it more appetising and delicious.

The colourful and flavourful meatless bento attracted a total of 188 participants over two rounds to experience the wonders of vegetarian food.

Member of public, Wong Mui Moy: After having it on the first day, I found the rice to be slightly hard. I was concerned about having it for another 10 days. But by the third day, I felt that it was pretty good and filling.

Member of public, Wong Ley Chin: (Is this your first time eating vegetarian food?) Yes, it doesn’t feel like eating vegetarian food. It's really delicious, and quite suits the public's taste.

Member of public, Huang Xue Qin: I am joining this for my health. I find it very easy to eat, it doesn’t make me thirsty and need to drink water all the time. Because of vegetarianism, after all, there are so many natural and man-made disasters now, and it also protects the environment.

With each bento, it has helped open up a new world of vegetarianism. We hope that more people will go meatless and turn vegetarianism into a trend.
