Elders unleash their creativity to raise funds for Türkiye earthquake victims
To raise funds for the Türkiye earthquake survivors, the elders at Tzu Chi Seniors Engagement & Enabling Node (SEEN) not only handmade shopping bags but also donated the handicraft they previously made. To encourage more people to donate, Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) members helped set up a stall at the Humanistic Youth Centre (HYC) where donors could bring home their selected handicrafts after making their donation.
The most difficult part is the edge. If the edge is not made correctly, it can’t be completed
If it is a triangle then it is wrong, you can’t connect it
Surely, there is a lot of work, the paper has to be washed and dried, and cut nicely and then folded. They said this is for fundraising. He said there are not enough bags, we need to make more.
These beautiful bags are made of plastic bags from beverage packaging. Originally a pastime for the elders at the Tzu Chi SEEN in their free time, the elders stepped up their production to raise funds for the Türkiye and Syria’s earthquake.
Senior, Loo Kai Li: I will make these for them to raise funds first. I will make some for myself later. We can do it again, no problem.
Senior, Boh May Chun: We just contribute what we have, time or money.
In addition to the bags, one even brought her family treasure.
Senior, Chris Chew: This is a bedspread. I made it a long time ago, around 1978. This is for charity, I don't mind. (Is it to help Türkiye?) Türkiye
Hi, just take a look, these are appreciation tokens. We are helping Türkiye to build their home.
On this day, TIMA members and elders from SEEN displayed their handicrafts at the Humanistic Youth Centre so that donors could pick their favourite items after making a donation.
Jessy Mak, Member of the public: I went to have breakfast, so I came over here to take a look because this is to raise funds for the earthquake in Türkiye, which is quite meaningful.
Lee Fong Choy, Member of the public: I like them all. They put in a lot of effort, so I have to support them even more.
(I want to learn) Look here, grandma teach you. See if there is a “T”. Awesome
Senior, Chow Yuet Meng: The items I (made) are also put over here. I am very happy because I can help Türkiye.
TIMA member, Hsu Cheng Yuan: Making these handicrafts can help a lot of people. They can raise funds, and secondly, the elders have a lot of things to do. They can do something to help society, which is very fulfilling for them.
Each of these items is priceless. The donation amount is entirely up to the donor. This donation not only raises funds for the earthquake survivors in Türkiye and Syria, but it is also the greatest support for the elders.
