The concept and value of urban farming in Singapore

Urban farming is a concept which can be practiced using many ways. We could grow hydroponic vegetables using high technology or we could also set up a garden on top of the parking lot. Either way, it is an attempt to grow more edible leafy vegetables with a limited land space. High technology agriculture method allows us to grow more vegetables, while traditional farming teaches us to respect nature. Food is a necessity of life; it can also bring people closer to each other.

Tzu Chi Humanistic Youth Centre’s outreach officer has visited a neighbouring community garden to find out about the feasibility and value of urban farming.

Urban Gardener - Ong Chun Yeow Now it is start to get know more about what an environmental issue, so I realize… ya, urban farming (and) having a garden is a very good platform. Especially for myself to raise awareness about what’s happening in environment to let people know about the souse of food actually comes from. How we know… how much word. Actually, the farmer will need to do just get a simple plate of vegetable and things like that. They come the appreciation and also they come the awareness That’s very important.

Tzu Chu Humanistic Youth Centre is expected to launch an urban farming concept project by second half of the year.

A vertical farming system will be set up at the space outside the centre. The centre will also be working with local urban farmers to promote sustainable lifestyle.

Tzu Chi Singapore Education Development _ Youth Outreach Officer - Hsu Che Wei We hope that HYC can be used as a platform to allow urban farmers and members of the public to come together and share their urban farming knowledge with each other. This will help residents in Singapore to plant edible leafy vegetables at home and implement the concept of farm to table in their daily life.

Such non-intensive urban farming is also focused on exploring environmental issues. The project hopes to attract the interest and attention of more members of the public through its fun learning approach.
